North Mackay
Located north of the river in Mackay are the suburbs of Andergrove, Beaconsfield, Glenella, Habana/Nindaroo, North Mackay, Mount Pleasant and Slade Point. Andergrove is a residential community and home to three State schools, two private schools, parks/playing fields, a small shopping strip, a new Woolworths supermarket, community centre and streets brimming with kids.
Beaconsfield is home to the Mackay Golf Course and it seems that almost every street in the suburb is a small culdesac. There are still quite a number of Housing Commission properties here, especially in the streets to the south of Beaconsfield School. The suburb of Glenella is located to the west of Mount Pleasant and has a number of quite distinct residential pockets. Glenella is home to Northview Gardens - an excellent, new, family-friendly community which has modern, rendered homes, bicycle trails and a central lagoon.
Just out of town are the prestige acreage areas of Nindaroo and Habana. The main road from Nindaroo winds past a hillside quarry before eventually entering the rural hamlet of Habana. These areas boast elevated lots, quiet, picturesque lanes and a relaxed atmosphere. The surrounding hills form protected valleys, where green pastureland blankets the dales.
Just across the bridge from the City Heart lies the residential suburb of North Mackay. The suburb offers affordable housing and excellent proximity to the City and Mount Pleasant. There are no less than two private and three State schools, the Pioneer Valley Hospital, a nursing home and three sports grounds. North Mackay is also home to the Gooseponds, a delightful waterway surrounded by walking tracks.
One of Mackay's most liveable suburbs, Mount Pleasant is located less than five minutes from the City centre. The area contains one of Mackay's largest concentrations of shops, community services, sports grounds and parklands. Blessed with elevated positions that give residents views down the Pioneer River to the coast, property here is highly sought-after.
Slade Point is a peninsula community looking out across Slade Bay and, despite being within just a few minutes of the busy port facility at Mackay Harbour, has the feel of a small coastal settlement. Much of the land to the south of the suburb is absorbed by the Slade Point Nature Reserve. To the west, large tracts are rendered unsuitable for development as they are wetlands that adjoin the rich fishing grounds of McCreadys Creek. These green buffer-zones and a lack of through traffic help to keep the area lovely and quiet.
