Mackay

Located south of the river in Mackay are the suburbs of Mackay City, East Mackay, Ooralea, Planlands, South Mackay and West Mackay. Mackay’s City Centre is bursting with modern facilities, architecturally designed luxury dwellings and a whole swag of new visitor attractions. The City Centre is a mix of urban design and mixed-use development. It hugs the beautiful Pioneer River and is home to several events and festivals.

One of the first areas in Mackay to have been urbanised, East Mackay is a welcoming place with two popular beaches and a variety of parkland types. East Mackay is exceptionally close to the CBD, making it possible to cycle the flat streets to work. Although there are no shops located actually in the suburb, some of the City's most active retail areas can be found just minutes away.

South Mackay is similar in nature to its neighbour East Mackay, yet holds a greater diversity of real estate. Indeed, the two suburbs flow into one another so well that it's hard to discern where one stops and the other starts. South Mackay is where important facilities such as the Mackay Airport, sports grounds, State and private schools, retirement homes and hotels are located.

Home to Mackay's beautiful Botanic Gardens, West Mackay is a suburb featuring many gracious homes. Well-established and popular with residents as well as investors, it lies close to the City centre, between the Pioneer River and Paradise St. Busy Nebo Rd slices through West Mackay's centre and is where many of the city's motels are located. Turn off Nebo Road though and, despite its central location, the suburb's residential streets are remarkably peaceful.

Sitting at the outer fringe of the City, and only five minutes from Mackay's CBD is Ooralea. It's the last major suburb on the road to Walkerston and is an area highly attractive to families desiring access to the coast, good schools and community facilities. The cane farms surrounding Ooralea represent the last remaining land bank to the south of the Pioneer River. Already, new development has occurred in streets west of the racecourse and additional land releases are taking place.
